The container terminal at Port has been in operation since 1983. The Port has a long term vision to focus on environment friendly cargoes like containers, cruise and cars by 2027 and formulated detailed plans to expand and modernize. Chennai Port's first (at Bharathi Dock) and second container terminal's contracts have already been awarded to Dubai Ports (World) and PSA-SICAL respectively. The Port now plans to develop a mega terminal through public private partnership. Details below: The proposal envisages a new terminal north of the existing Bharathi Dock with two new breakwaters totalling about 4.5 km in length, a continuous quay length of 2 km and 18m alongside depth initially. The basin area will be 300 hectares and a back up area of 90 hectares reclaimed using the dredged material. The terminal will be able to handle ultra-large container ships with a capacity exceeding 15000 TEUs and a length of 400m. Chennai Port invites applications from eligible bidders for the 'Request for Qualification' (RFQ) for the development of the mega container terminal on BOT basis. The RFQ document is on sale from December 15, 2008 to February 10, 2009 on submission of a demand draft (non refundable) for $ 650 drawn in favour of "The Chairman, Chennai Port Trust" payable at Chennai.
