My customer has a shell and tube heat exchanger in Decatur, IL that has a contaminated powder like substance on the inner walls of the 1” outside diameter 304 stainless steel tubing. This substance on the tube walls needs to be removed either mechanically or with a solvent. The tubing specification is SA-249, TP304 WLD. There are 380 tubes that are about 22 feet long. One end of the heat exchanger has been removed to expose the ends of the tubes the other end of the tubes has smaller diameter tubes inserted into the 1” tubes for a short distance of about 4”. It will not be possible to completely run through each tube in this case but if 20 feet of a tube were polished, it would improve our operation. What type of surface roughness can you achieve and finally do you have an estimated time to complete this work. We are in the process of further examination of the tubes using a borescope and may also try using a cleaning solution on some of the tubes.
