art materials request Inquiry (采购产品): art materials request Dear Sir or Madam, I am preparing an outdoor sculpture using stainless steel and silver kitchen utensils (gadgets and flatware) to the aesthetic of an everyday object engaging the phenomena of light. I would greatly appreciate your consideration to donate or loan Hutzler kitchen utensils (functional or dysfunctional) for this sculpture. I want to use kitchen products that fit comfortably in one's hand items that designed for specific use. The sculpture will be on view Nov. 27 –Dec. 3, 2005 in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Sculpture Courtyard. I am creating this sculpture for Helen Marie Nugent’s DES OB 4035 “Light in Conjunction” class. DES OB stands for Designed Objects which is apart of the Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects Department. The space consists of 4279 square feet. I would like to fill each square foot with approximately 50 utensils. Thus, I need 213,950 pieces of stainless steel kitchen utensils to fill the space. I would be grateful any amount of utensils that you can provide. The utensils would need to be delivered before Thanksgiving, (Nov. 23, 2005). I can either return them to you at the end of the exhibition or donate them to the charity of your choice, preferably in the Chicago area. Please send the kitchen gadgets and utensils to: Miss Allie Compton c/o The Mail Room The School of the Art Institute of Chicago 280 S. Columbus Drive Chicago, IL 60603 Below is the proposal that I submitted to explain the piece in a bit more detail. I would greatly appreciate your response and happy to provide more information. Please feel free to either e-mail (acompt@artic.edu) or call (cell 312.502.8306) me. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I am Sincerely Yours, Allie Compton Allie Compton Light in Conjunction Oct. 18, 2005 Project #: Self-Generated and Darkness Projects "The Art of Domesticity" I would like to propose to install stainless steel kitchen gadgets and silverware into the Sculpture Courtyard Nov. 28 - Dec. 3, 2005 to explore the phenomena of light in a variety of light conditions. Akin to Walter deMaria's Lighting Field, planting the material will create a linear platform to engage light. Placing the objects outside provide a wider range of light exploration, such as daylight, flood lights, incandescent lights, embellished with gels and darkness/starlight. Although I have not determined the data fields that define the project, the visual placement of the silverware and kitchen gadgets will refer to the geographic origins of the data. In addition, using kitchen gadgets and flatware automatically places the concept of the installation within a feminist narrative. I would like to create a field of luminance and document the array of color within natural and artificial lighting conditions. I select stainless steel kitchen gadgets and utensils for my materials because almost everyone uses them on a daily basis without any thought except the task at hand. Presenting the kitchen gadgets and utensils in outdoor sculpture courtyard, their attributes such as form, design, shiny material and social history are brought to the forefront. Technically, I need to set up various lighting conditions to experiment in preparation to control the dazzling spectrum. I am in the process of soliciting manufacturers to donate or loan the material. Furthermore, I am exploring data websites to find suitable and interesting information that will enhance/validate the installation and choice of material beyond its superficial level. I believe this element will inform the theoretical conceptual goals of the project and surpass the laws of physics and engage the environs. This project will advance my knowledge of phenomena of light and controlling it in an outdoor environment, from multiple elevations. As I mentioned above, I will document the field of luminance under a variety of lighting conditions. I am seeking data that will connect the phenomena of light with the kitchen gadget and utensil besides their everday utilitarian function. * I am influenced by Jack Goldstein's short film "The Knife" and how dramatic changes of light upon a knife evokes a sensation of suspense and manipulating the shadows of the red wall that the film is projected.(1.) In addition, one of the "Bleu" film still, light refracts through a blue crystal mobile upon the female protagonist's cheeks during a tender moment of self reflection. 1. (http://www.themoderninstitute.com/projects/j_goldstein/index.shtml) " was among the first to use both appropriated and carefully staged footage to isolate familiar images from their contexts. With technical devices such as looping and special effects, Goldstein challenged assumptions about the value of images in a media-saturated society."
