My project group is having difficulty finding glue or adhesive with which we can bond 3- mil “Lexan” film to itself. The problem does not show itself in shear. In shear most of the products we have tested hold adequately. It is the peel strength, or better put, the lack of outstanding peel strength that over time causes the problem. Our application dictates that we dare not lose the flexibility of the Lexan film in the course of making the bond. Certain products we have tried make the “Lexan” film stiff at the bond. Once it becomes stiff, any bending that occurs in normal use of our bonded joint causes the Lexan to crack along the bond line. Our goal is to join one piece of 3 mil “Lexan” to another piece of 3 mil “Lexan” at right angles. To do this we crease one piece of “Lexan” about _ inch in from one of its edges to create a long narrow tab that juts out at 90 degrees to the sheet. We apply the glue or adhesive to this tab and to the “Lexan” sheet that will meet this tab, and clamp the two pieces together. When the glue or adhesive cures we then tension the sheet (that we have attached at right angles) to see how well the glue bond holds. Over the course of days this bond slowly creeps apart by peeling itself away from the other sheet of “Lexan.” Hopefully you technical team will have encountered this kind of problem before and know of a solution. Were we dealing with rip-stop nylon cloth or the like we would forego gluing and sew the two pieces together. However, “Lexan” film does not like being sewed and just tears the threads out of the needle holes at the slightest excuse.
