Inquiry (采购产品): Info on Aluminum Magnet Wire Good Morning! My client manufactures small fractional horsepower PM electric motors that power high-end, radio-controlled racing cars. We are getting into what is a new technology for us. This being motor armatures wound with "light-metal" magnet wire, aluminum specifically. We have done a few sample motors and aluminum wire shows tremedous promise in it's ability to "spool-up" much faster than copper due to it's lighter weight. This is even after we compensate for the extra resistance by going up two larger sizes in Al. As you know, Al wire has 40% more resistance but is 60% lighter than the equivalent copper size. This is enough to give a motor so made (and the car it's installed in) quite an advantage on a layed-out course. What we want is the pricing and availability of Al wire in sizes #15 through #20 awg, in standard Al and Cu-clad Al if you have it or can get it. We are prepared for quite an increase in cost for the Cu-clad type. The insulation is not critical, solderable would be nice but nothing higher-rated temp wise than single-armoured poly. This motors run quite hot even though they only run about 5 minutes at a time. Although the Cu-clad Al wire is not a problem, so far we haven't found a way of attaching the straight Al wire to a copper commutator. This is due to not finding an appropriate type of Al solder that will meet our temperature requirements. We found lots of Al solderable paste that melts at 375F or so and Al brazing rod that melts above 750F but nothing in-between. For copper wire we are using the Kester high-temp solder which is mostly lead. It works fine. If you would happen to know of any company making Al solder that would fall into the temp range we are looking for we would appreciate any contacts you can give us on that. Looking forward to your reply either by email (preferred) or by phone. Please do not share my phone number with any third parties.
