Attention : R&D Director

Inquiry (采购产品): Attention : R&D Director Below is a letter describing a new Hydroforming research project being conducted in Ontario that you may find of interest. If you are interested in participating or learning more about this project, please let me know and I can put you in touch with the appropriate personnel. Regards, David Frey - Business Development Consultant Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade david.frey@2ontario.com 586-416-0127 IRDI ( Industrial Research and Development Institute in Midland, ON, has recently received approval for an Ontario Innovation Trust grant related to the infrastructure to study the tribological aspects of the hydroforming process. The infrastructure includes a fully instrumented hydroforming press, new surface texture analysis equipment and microscope. To-date in excess of $1million in either cash or in-kind contributions has been earmarked in support for this research project. Contributors include IRDI, industry, research institutions and government agencies. The principle investigator for the related project is Dr. Jean V. Reid who is IRDI's Manager/Principal Scientist in Tribology. The research project that is being undertaken is to compare and correlate the various tests that are currently used to evaluate material formability for hydroforming applications. The research partners include the University of Waterloo (U of W) and Ohio State University (OSU). (Testsare expected to include the corner fill test, twist compression test, as well as the expansion, guiding and transition zone tests currently being used at OSU. The corner fill test and twist compression test are both used at IRDI and U of W). The results will be compared to a production application for validation. A friction model that can be used in a commercial analysis program will also be developed; it must be realistic and practical for it to be usable by industry. We are currently preparing an application for government funding to support a PhD student to work on the experimental evaluations and the modeling. This support is being requested in additional to the already approved funding, for a three-year period; industrial funding is required to leverage the government funding. The details of the exact materials and lubricants have not yet been established but will be determined in collaboration with our industrial partners. Some examples of the benefits to industry include: * reliable friction data for designers * benefit for new products (OEM's) and existing products in production (OEM's & hydroformers) * ranking of materials (tube and die) and lubricants * benefit for hydroformers, material and lubricant companies * identify the most representative of tests (or combination of tests) for studying hydroforming * benefit for OEM's, hydroformers, material and lubricant companies * standardize on test procedures * (related to this, Dr. Jean V. Reid chairs an ASTM committee that is currently developing an ASTM standard for the twist compression test) * establish a platform from which to perform R&D for new materials or new emerging technologies in metal forming * the work on friction models and the understanding of the importance of considering the tribological aspects in material formability will assist with any new technologies in metal forming. IRDI has been carrying out Hydroforming research and testing projects for the past seven years. During this same time period, IRDI has also been nvolved in studying the tribological aspects of various metal forming technologies, including Hydroforming. Clients have included various automotive parts suppliers and material suppliers as well as consortiums such as USCAR - US Consortium for Automotive research, A/SP - Auto/Steel Partnership and Auto 21. The implementation of the research project's findings will have an immediate beneficial impact on industry. Thank you, Chris P.
