University of Cincinnati Manufacturing Research

Inquiry (采购产品): University of Cincinnati Manufacturing Research We are writing to ask for any assistance you may provide in determining the effect of adding an additional stage to the manufacturing process, namely an adhesive plastic film. But first, let us introduce ourselves. We are three students of senior standing at the College of Applied Science of the University of Cincinnati majoring in Construction Management, namely Chris Cook, Michael Collins, and Ed Tieman. We received your contact information from the ThomasNet Website. The senior class of the Construction Science Department at the College of Applied Science is leading the way for the 2006 Technology Exposition held every May at the Cincinnati Convention Center. Each team of three students is challenged to develop a new technology or innovation relevant to the construction field in it’s broadest sense. Upon identifying a need, the students are encouraged to develop a possible solution and prepare a scientific report to their peers as well as industry professionals to complete the requirements for graduation. The problem that we have identified is that electrical outlets need a layer of protection during the construction process to ensure a deliverable product. What we are proposing is a prepackaged electrical outlet with a thin adhesive film that can be removed with no remaining residue on the outlet. Please view the diagram below intended to serve as a better visual aid on what we propose to do. Existing Manufacturing of Outlets → Bulk Packing → Consumer Proposed Manufacturing of Outlets → Lamination or Skin Pack of Adhesive Film on Surface of Outlets → Bulk Packaging → Consumer After repetitive attempts to seek information from many national electrical manufacturing companies, we have fallen victim to miles of red tape in R and D departments. What we know is that our type of packaging with a flexible barrier is a skin pack. We also realize that some form of thermoplastic film will be used to “laminate” the face of the electrical outlets. Thus, the topic has become a manufacturing issue vs. an application issue. What we do not know is the impact of adding a stage to the manufacturing process. After many conversations with our academic advisors, they have suggested that we turn to the plastics industry to determine this impact. The questions that we seek remedy to are listed below. 1.) What percentage (%) of total cost is represented in each stage of the manufacturing process? 2.) On average, what is the percentage (%) of cost of adding one (1) additional stage in the manufacturing line? 3.) How would you approach a standard cost analysis for adding an extra step or piece of machinery to process skin packaging? 4.) If applicable, can you provide us with a rough guesstimate as to how much this extra step would cost? 5.) Do you know of any possible contacts to further assist us with our research? We sincerely appreciate ANY response/s you may have. Please send all responses back to sender (tiemanea@uc.email.edu). Time is of the essence, as this is coming up in May. Your timely response is appreciated. If you have any questions or additional comments, please don’t hesitate to contact Mike or Ed via email or telephone listed below.
