Inquiry (采购产品): Fiber Optics Hello, my name is Phil Gawel and I am the Engineer Mentor for the 7th grade science class at Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School in Detroit Michigan. My class of 22 students and their homeroom teacher have entered into the 2006 national competition called "Future City" (www.futurecity.org). These students are currently in 6th grade, but will be in the 7th grade by the time the competition judging happens. The process is a long one with deliverables due from September through December of this year. That is why it is important we get started now! The 2005 Michigan competition recently concluded and we came in 10th out of 54 schools. We are determined to do better this year. This is a national competition sponsored by National Engineers Week and regional affiliates such as The Engineering Society of Detroit. The competition goal is to increase awareness of engineering careers to middle school students. We are in the planning phase of the competition, which is to build a scale model of our city to be judged at the Regional Competition in January 2006. Our planned city for this year's competition will be built on a 30" X 60" plywood board and cannot be higher than 24". Since our city must exist in the year 2150 or later we need to look for innovative ways to heat, light, transport and live in the 22nd century. That brings me to my reason for writing to you. Our city of the future, the "New" New Orleans will have all of its public lighting come from one source and distributed by fiber optic cables. My class needs to learn about fiber optics and how it works and make conclusions as to how it can be applied 150 years from now. This is a request for literature, video or other educational sources you may have on fiber optics that we can have/borrow to familiarize ourselves with the concept. We will also be looking to sources such as you for samples to install and function in our model city. Can I count on your support?
