India is one of the largest Agro and Food producers in world and Indian food processing sector is one of the largest in the world, ranks 5th in terms of its volume produced and consumed. Representing nearly 6.3 per cent of GDP and 13 per cent of the country's exports, the sector attracts six per cent of the total industrial investment in the country. It also employs around 1.6 million workers-which figures to almost 18 per cent of the country's industrial labour force. With an approximate annual turnover of Rs 2500 billion (US$ 69.4 billion), the Indian agro products and food processing sector also includes value added products such as semi-processed and ready-to-eat packaged food that fetches an annual turnover of Rs 40 billion (approximately). The Indian Food-processing sector has a huge potential to move upwards both interms of volume and value addition.Some of the leading International names in the sector include Hindustan Lever, ITC, MTR and Dabur,Amul,Haldirams,Adani Wilmar,to name a few.Increased spending by the double income households , changing food habits of the Indian middle class,Fitness savvy and dietary adherence are some of the reasons for the growth of the Indian Food processing industry.The industry is also leveraging technology to bring in automation ,efficiency and reduce wastage in food processing through import of state of the art technology, investments in R & D to develop new solutions etc.etc., India in the processs is also being perceived as the Future Food factory to the world.India offers global Food processing Equipment, Technology and Solutions companies to expand their markets in India.The Confederation that has been at the forefront of the development of the food processing industry continues to piut industry in touch with new market opportunities and in the process create linkages both forward and backward through its biennial Foodpro held in chennai since 1995. CII organises India's premier Food processing & Food technology fair Foodpro -The 6th edition of Foodpro -Foodpro 2005 will be held in chennai between November 12-15,2005. Foodpro 2005 features A 4-Day Exhibition 2-Day Industry Conference Sourcing Forum International Country Level Participation Tasting sessions and Culinary Demonstrations Other parallel activities CII - McKinsey initiative of joint research and publishing of FAIDA (Food & Agriculture Integrated Development Action) Report in 1997 played a vital role in spurring growth of Food Processing Industry in India. During the last eight years India has made good progress in setting up manufacturing bases, supply chain and logistics and food wholesaling and retailing.FAIDA released in 1997 still remains a landmark document on the Food processing Industry in India. The most spectacular development during the eight years is transformation of India's image from a food importing country to a food exporting country.While the report was printed in 1997, much of what is put down there is still very current. As part of Foodpro 2003 CII & McKinsey & Co presented an Updated report on FAIDA , which looked at the developments in the Post FAIDA years. Foodpros have been a platform for exchange of ideas,new tieups , joint ventures,etc., and the event has grown in stature in the last decade since its first edition in 1995.It is becoming the Food Industry's single most important market place , both for the domestic and International companies, who are keen to further business interests in India.
